Yang, Byunggon. 2000. A perceptual experiment of English monophthongs. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 3-1, 111-111. This study focused on how human beings discriminate vowel pairs with varied formant frequencies. 27 Korean and American subjects participated in the AX discriminatory tests of 376 English vowels synthesized. Fant's (1972) bandwidth equations were employed to dynamically tune to the varied formant values. Then, the center formant frequency values of each subject for which each subject perceived the same vowel quality were collected. Results showed that the center formant frequency calculated on the data of both Korean and American groups matched exactly the formant frequency values of the synthesis model. This seems to reflect the accurate human auditory mechanism. Future studies on the human auditory scale using synthesized speech stimuli will be desirable to develop an auditory scale applicable to speech recognition. (Dongeui University)
